Speer Law Enforcement Ammo: The Gold Dot Duty Lines

Speer states that more than 3,000 law enforcement agencies worldwide carry Gold Dot, and the departments it lists include the New Jersey State Police, the New York Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, the Pennsylvania State Police, Nassau County Police and Las Vegas Metro Police. For New Jersey agencies looking at what the state police carry, that first name on the list is the relevant one.
Something worth knowing about how Speer develops these rounds: the FBI wrote the protocol, and Speer and Federal test against it directly, calibrating gelatin and measuring expansion to the letter. They also run Wound Ballistic Workshops that bring officers and agencies into the testing process rather than just handing them a spec sheet. If your department wants to understand why a round performs the way it does, that access exists.

Speer LE Gold Dot Duty Handgun

This is the core duty line and the one most departments mean when they say Gold Dot. The construction virtually eliminates core and jacket separation, which is what stops a bullet from coming apart when it passes through auto glass, a car door or heavy clothing. The patented cavity-forming process uses two stages rather than one to control terminal effects and hold onto retained weight, and the core and jacket are notched at the same time so expansion stays symmetrical.

The line is deep. Duty loads run through 25 Auto and 32 Auto, 380 Auto 90gr, 9mm Luger in 115, 124 and 147 grain, 9mm +P 124gr, 38 Special and 38 Special +P in 125gr, 357 Magnum 158gr, 357 SIG 125gr, 40 S&W in 165 and 180 grain, 10mm Auto 200gr, 44 Special 200gr, 45 Glock A.P. 200gr, 45 Auto 230gr and 45 Auto +P 200gr.

One procurement detail worth noting: most Gold Dot duty loads ship 1,000 rounds per case, while the lower-volume calibers such as 25 Auto, 32 Auto, 10mm Auto and 44 Special come 200 to a case. That matters when you are budgeting.

Speer LE Gold Dot G2

G2 works differently from a conventional hollow point. Instead of a large cavity in the nose, it has a shallow dish filled with a high-performance elastomer. On impact the elastomer is forced into engineered internal fissures to start expansion, rather than relying on target material entering a hollow point. Speer says the result is extremely uniform expansion, better separation of the petals, and more consistent penetration across barrier types, gun platforms and barrel lengths.

Speer describes Gold Dot G2 as the highest-scoring round in the history of FBI protocol testing. The G2 duty line is offered in three loads: 9mm Luger 147gr, 40 S&W 180gr and 45 Auto +P 230gr.

Gold Dot Short Barrel

Short barrels bleed velocity, and a bullet designed around full-size barrel speeds may not open reliably out of a snub. Speer built this line to expand consistently in barrels as short as 1.9 inches, with reliable performance across a range of distances and velocities.

This matters for backup guns, detective carry and off-duty weapons. Loads include 22 WMR 40gr, 9mm +P 124gr, 38 Special +P 135gr, 357 Magnum 135gr, 40 S&W 180gr and 45 Auto 230gr.

Gold Dot Duty Rifle

Patrol rifle programs get the same bonded construction. The rifle loads use flash-suppressed propellants, reach muzzle velocities up to 3220 fps, and feed reliably in AR platforms with either standard or short barrels. Jacket-to-core bonding holds weight through barriers as tough as auto glass.

The duty rifle line covers 223 Rem in 55, 62 and 75 grain, 224 Valkyrie 90gr, and 308 Win in 150 and 168 grain.

Speer Training Ammunition That Matches the Duty Load

Buying duty ammunition without buying the matching practice load is a common and expensive mistake. Speer built the Lawman family to solve exactly that.
Lawman TMJ is the standard range load, and Speer describes it plainly as delivering the ballistic equivalent of Gold Dot duty loads at a fraction of the cost for training. It uses high-value brass cases, CCI primers and Speer TMJ bullets. The total metal jacket encloses the base, which cuts lead exposure indoors compared with a conventional plated bullet. Loads cover 380 Auto 95gr, 9mm in 115, 124 and 147 grain, 38 Special 125gr, 38 Special +P 158gr, 357 SIG 125gr, 40 S&W in 165 and 180 grain, 45 Glock A.P. in 185 and 200 grain, and 45 Auto 230gr.
Lawman Clean-Fire adds lead-free primers on top of the electro-chemically applied jacket that completely surrounds the core, and Speer says it delivers the same accuracy as standard ammunition. If your officers qualify indoors twice a year, this line exists for that situation. It is offered in 9mm 124 and 147 grain, 38 Special +P 158gr, 357 SIG 125gr, 40 S&W 165 and 180 grain, and 45 Auto 230gr.
Lawman RHT is for shoot houses and steel. RHT stands for Reduced Hazard Training. These use lead-free sintered bullets that crumble on impact with a metal backstop, which improves air quality indoors and cuts bullet bounce-back. The detail range officers appreciate is that the bullet nose is distinctly marked so it can be told apart from conventional ammunition at a glance. RHT comes in 9mm 100gr, 357 SIG 100gr, 40 S&W 125gr and 45 Auto 155gr, with the SinterFire projectile in most loads.

Speer Self-Defense Ammo and How It Relates to the Duty Line

Gold Dot's reputation on the civilian self-defense side comes directly from its duty record. The same bonded construction that keeps a bullet together through a car door is what makes Speer self-defense ammo a common recommendation for personal protection, and Speer sells Gold Dot Personal Protection and Carry Gun loads through consumer retailers in a range of common carry calibers.
One thing to be clear about: Lawmen Supply is not a retail operation. We do not sell to the general public. Our Speer inventory is sold to verified law enforcement agencies and government purchasers. Individual officers looking for personal protection loads should go through their department, and civilian buyers should use Speer's store locator to find a retail dealer.

Matching Training Ammunition to Your Duty Load

Write down your exact duty load first, including caliber, grain weight and whether it is standard or +P. Then pick the Lawman load in the same caliber and, where available, the same bullet weight. A department carrying 9mm Gold Dot 147gr should be training on 147gr Lawman, not 115gr, because the recoil impulse and point of impact are not the same.
Next, factor in where you shoot. Indoor ranges point toward Lawman Clean-Fire. Shoot houses and steel work point toward Lawman RHT. Outdoor ranges give you the most freedom and the lowest cost per round.
Then check what your agency is allowed to buy. In New Jersey, duty ammunition selection is a documented decision, and it is far easier to confirm before the purchase order goes through than to explain afterward.

Standard Gold Dot uses a conventional hollow point cavity with a bonded jacket and core. Gold Dot G2 replaces the large cavity with a shallow dish filled with an elastomer, which is forced into engineered internal fissures on impact to begin expansion instead of relying on target material entering the cavity. Speer says this produces more uniform expansion and more consistent penetration across different barriers, platforms and barrel lengths.

We carry Speer for duty and training. That includes the Gold Dot duty handgun line, Gold Dot G2, Gold Dot Short Barrel, Gold Dot Duty Rifle in 223 Rem, 224 Valkyrie and 308 Win, and the Lawman training family including Lawman TMJ, Lawman Clean-Fire and Lawman RHT. Tell us your calibers and we will confirm current availability.

Speer is still manufactured in the United States and remains headquartered in Lewiston, Idaho, but ownership changed in November 2024. Speer, along with Federal, Remington, CCI and HEVI-Shot, was sold as part of The Kinetic Group to Czechoslovak Group, a Prague-based industrial group. The transaction cleared both the Federal Trade Commission and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, and CSG stated it would keep the U.S. ammunition business headquartered in Anoka, Minnesota.

Lawman Clean-Fire. It pairs a total metal jacket bullet, where the jacket is applied electro-chemically and completely surrounds the core, with lead-free primers. Speer says it delivers the same accuracy as standard ammunition. For close-range or steel work indoors, Lawman RHT goes further by using lead-free sintered bullets that crumble against a metal backstop.

RHT stands for Reduced Hazard Training. The bullets are lead-free and sintered so they crumble on impact with a metal backstop, which improves indoor air quality and reduces bullet bounce-back. That makes them suited to shoot houses, steel target work and close-range drills. Each RHT bullet nose is distinctly marked so range officers can tell it apart from conventional rounds.

Most Speer duty and training handgun loads ship 1,000 rounds per case. Lower-volume calibers such as 25 Auto, 32 Auto, 10mm Auto and 44 Special come 200 per case, and Gold Dot Short Barrel varies by load. Boxes are generally 50 rounds, except 25 Auto, 32 Auto and 44 Special, which are 20. Duty rifle loads are 500 per case.
